SOAR Academy students must complete no fewer than 2 enrichment activities each school year (1 each semester), as well as document and reflect on these experiences.
Choice of specific enrichment activities is up to each student, but students should strive for variety in their experiences. For instance, a student who attends an art show would be encouraged to pursue a different type of enrichment experience the next time, such as an orchestra performance or a workshop on financial aid for college, rather than a second (albeit different) art show.
Some activities will be held and sponsored by Westwood and SOAR, while others exist out in the surrounding communities. I will make suggestions, and students and families also have the option to design and choose experiences. Activities that students pursue as a component of membership within a different school group (like a trip for BETA club, for example) may not count as SOAR enrichment.
Community Service is certainly one form of enrichment.
Students may choose to perform community service and reflect on that experience for 1 credit towards their annual enrichment activities (i.e., a student will graduate with a minimum of 8 total enrichment experiences, and a maximum of 4 may be community service projects).
If students would like to pursue this option, they must first submit a proposal and have the service "approved." Students are encouraged to seek community service projects that are meaningful (necessary and valuable to the community being served), goal-oriented (student feels a sense of purpose and relevance), hands-on (the student is truly serving others, not just fundraising or filing), and extensive (the project is truly an organized experience from start to finish, rather than a disjointed few hours picking up odd jobs). Students are encouraged to complete community service whether or not they use this service for an enrichment credit!
